What is Reiki
Reiki (ray-key) is Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It was discovered by Mikao Usui in March 1922. Reiki is administered by "laying on hands" and techniques such as this have been practiced for thousands of years.
The word Reiki comes from Japanese kanji. Kanji are ideograms used in the written language of Japan. The word Reiki is represented by two kanji, Rei and Ki. Rei is the upper character and Ki is the lower character. Rei defined means Higher Intelligence which guides the functioning and creation of the universe. Ki-life force energy-is the non physical energy that animates all living things. Ki is received from sleep, sunshine, food and the air we breath. Ki can be increased by doing meditation and breathing exercises.

Reiki is made up of life force energy guided by Higher Intelligence. It is spiritual in nature but not a religion. Reiki energy seems to have an intelligence of its own flowing where it is needed in the client and creating the healing conditions necessary for the individuals needs. It cannot be guided by the mind, therefore it is not limited by the experience or the ability of the practitioner. It also can not be misused as it always creates a healing effect. Ki that flows through and around the individual is the source or cause of health. When the flow of Ki is disrupted the tissues and organs are affected which is the cause of illness. Ki disruption causes illness. Ki responds to thoughts and feelings and will flow more strongly or be weakened depending on ones thoughts and feelings. These negative thoughts and feelings restrict the flow of Ki. The mind exists thought out the entire body not just the brain. Therefore our negative thoughts are in the brain and also collect in various parts of the body. Those places where negative thoughts collect is where the flow of Ki is restricted. The great value of Reiki is that because it is guided by Higher Intelligence, it knows exactly where to go and how to respond to restrictions in the flow of Ki. Reiki breaks up and helps remove negative thoughts or feelings lodged in the unconscious mind and body which will allow a healthy flow of Ki. As this happens, unhealthy physcial organs and tissues become properly nourished with Ki and began functioning in a balanced healthy way replacing illness with health.
In a standard treatment Reiki energy flows from the practitioners hands into the client. The client can be laying on a massage table, sitting or standing. The client remains fully clothed. The practitioner places her/his hands on or near the clients body in a series of hand positions. These include positions around the head and shoulders, the stomach, and feet. Other, more specific positions may be used based on the clients needs. Positions are held for the length of time the practitioners intuition advises. The whole treatment usually lasts between 45 and 90 minutes.
The Reiki experience can vary from person to person however most experience feelings of deep relaxation. Some feel a radiance that surrounds and emits from them. Reiki energy encourages one to let go of fear, anxiety, tension and other negative feelings and state of peace and well being is experienced. One may express emotions by crying or change in body temperature. By the end of the session one may feel revitalized, refreshed, and have a more positive outlook. Reiki helps facilitate healing of any medical condition and can work in conjunction with any medical intervention. Reiki does not cause any side effects but may reduce side effects from illnesses.
